Status Update:
Ingrid was “hit” and cursed at by a motorist yesterday who yelled “Bikes don’t belong on the road you dumb whore!” i got a photo of his plates filed a police report.

i’m just lucky i wasn’t hurt at all, and I stayed really calm and literally just cited the CVC 21202 to him and he yelled and yelled. Since he and I were stuck at a red-light, I had just enough time to whip out my iphone and snap a beautiful clear shot of his vehicle, face and license plates! Is there anything my iphone can’t do?! The police even asked me to print out that photo to bring in as evidence, which I happily did.

Now how did you know I straight up SUGGESTED that to the officers I filed the report with! I’ve been really lucky with the LAPD as well, if you approach them with a spirit of respect and of concern for your safety, they are quite understanding indeed. Of course, i’m always dropping LA City Councilmans’ names left and right and professing my love of bike cops…..
This is now the second time I was able to successfully get a report from LAPD after an incident, and both times they called it “Felony assault with a deadly weapon” …..
I would strongly encourage anyone threatened or intimidated by a motorist to try to get their license plate numbers and file a report. This also will help with the statistical evidence for LAPD to turn to.

Ha ha. Because I turn and face them. I then recite the California Vehicle Code and whip out my iPhone as I explain that I am taking a picture for the police. Of course, he had already called me a dumb whore at that point… 
Best part- I did tell him that I had a Masters Degree, to which he yelled, “then why are you such a dumb whore riding a bike?! Get a job!!
Of course, I do have a job, but his bias was pretty remarkable.

I’m sorry and sad that you went through this and glad you’re OK. However, if it was going to happen to someone, it’s sort of good that it happened to you because you were calm enough and smart enough to do something about it!!!

Thank D, me too! I would love to see the LAPD continue to expand their notion of “Cyclists Rights” given that we are in fact traffic…. When you crash your car into another persons car, there is a liability there…..where is the punishment and liability for drivers who choose to harrass, intimidate or worse, injure a bicyclist (member that road raging doctor??? whatever happened to that guy?!!)
There ought to be a law!
